edb9146b-b6a4-45e8-ae02-f5d3070a2b7c Obituary

MENDES, Harold C., Ph.D., L Col (ret), DTM

May 1948 – Sep 2015

Harold lived life to the fullest and passed peacefully supported by his wife, Christiane, children Kristine (Sean), and Karl (Hollis), siblings Maurice (Claudette), Georges (Christine), Michel (Carmen), Sylvia (Bernard), Simon-Pierre (Ginette), and many nephews and nieces.
As he dealt with the challenging moments of his failing health, Harold saw every day as a gift, all the while displaying extraordinary courage, optimism, and stoicism.
Harold often expressed how grateful he was to have such supportive family and friends, and how appreciative he was of the care given by those in the medical community. You are too numerous to mention by name, but you know who you are. Thank you all.
Family will receive friends on Sat. Sep 26 @ St Paul’s Anglican Church (20 Young Rd, Kanata) from noon until the time to celebrate Harold’s life in Sanctuary at 3 PM. A reception will follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St Paul’s Anglican Church or the The Ride (Ottawa Hospital Foundation Cancer Fundraiser).

A quick note to say goodbye – LCol Martineau

Dear Colleagues,

Paddy Douglass Retires After 42 Years

Longtime PSO, cleverly disguised as a Highland Officer retires after 42 years service. I joined the branch in 1991, after an 18 year career as an NCO in the Air Ops and Armoured occupations. I treasure some of the friendships established in the PSel branch and will miss you all. I am posting a picture that was taken last night, my last night parading class A, as well as a couple of older ones, including Remembrance Day 2014. For those members of the branch who are unaware of the versatility of our occupation, I finished my service as the manager of conflict management for western Canada as well as serving Volem with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada as the DCO. Here are the before and after pics. Intellegere.

The passing of Dr. Major (retired) Pascal Pignal, CD2

It is with sadness that I report the passing of Dr. Major (retired) Pascal (Pat) Pignal, CD2, on Friday, 21 March, after a brief period of hospitalization. Pat was a 35-year veteran of the RCASC and CF, and a long-time member of the Personnel Selection Branch, who held senior PSO positions in many of the functional areas that existed over the course of his career; he was also a life member of the PSOA. He retired from teaching at the MPL Department of RMC in the late 1980s, after which he served at the CF Recruiting Centre in Kingston for a period of time. Pat was a man of honour and commitment to the CF and the PSel Branch, as well as a good friend and excellent colleague to those who served with him.  He was one of only two PSOs who, while serving, earned a doctoral degree, using only his own resources. Over the course of his career, he  made many and varied contributions to the PSel Branch–including training and orienting many novice PSOs. Very importantly, in 1984, he headed up a four-member (other members were Majors Digger MacDougall, Karol Wenek and Reg Ellis) in-Branch Career Development Committee, the recommendations of which led to a greatly improved PSel Branch organization and career structure.

Pat had been residing in Kingston, ON, with his wife, Alice, since his retirement and he and Alice enjoyed golfing and bowling until his health deteriorated .

A private family service will be held at the Heavenly Rest Cemetery and Mausoleum, Windsor, ON, on Sat, 29 Mar. Messages can be passed to Alice at 975 Hudson Drive, Kingston, ON; pignala@queensu.ca.

The Pignal family has requested no flowers but have indicated that  memorial donations to the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish—I assume in Kingston–would be appreciated.

A big thank you from LCol Sutherland in Kabul * Un gros merci du Lcol Sutherland à Kaboul

LCol Sutherland in Kabul with her Principal

I wish to thank the PSOA for the Care Package. What a morale booster! Being in the sixth month of the tour, little reminders from Canada and our Branch are so meaningful.  The card with everyone’s signature was especially so – from the good wishes to the spots of spilled wine! I keenly remember missing the mess dinner, and I told my colleagues here how crazy our Branch functions can be.  The deployment experience has been amazing thus far – thank you all for thinking of me here in the dusty climes of Kabul!
